DIGITAL STORYTELLING IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Digital Storytelling in Your Community

Digital storytelling (DST) is a transformative approach that blends technology with personal expression, fostering meaningful engagement and learning within communities. Rooted in storytelling traditions but enhanced with modern tools, DST aligns seamlessly with the ISTE Empowered Learner Standard, particularly Standard 1.1, which emphasizes leveraging technology to achieve and demonstrate competency in learning goals (ISTE, n.d.).

Empowered Learning through Digital Storytelling

Digital storytelling empowers learners by placing them at the center of the creative process, enabling them to choose tools that best convey their message and reflect on their experiences. For example, in my project on experiential learning in Italy, I curated photos, videos, and reflections, using tools like Canva, to communicate about cultural landmarks and their educational value. This aligns with ISTE Standard 1.1.d, which highlights the importance of understanding and utilizing various technologies. The creative freedom offered by DST allows learners to tailor their narratives, develop technological literacy, and transfer skills across platforms—essential in today’s digital age (ISTE, n.d.).

Impact on Community Members

DST provides a platform for students, educators, and families to connect and grow. For students, creating a digital story about a transformative experience like traveling to Italy fosters personal growth, independence, and cultural awareness. As Kubravi et al. (2018) explain, DST enhances critical thinking and academic performance by encouraging learners to analyze their experiences and articulate them in meaningful ways. For teachers, DST is a pedagogical tool to model reflective practice, showcase innovative learning strategies, and inspire peers to integrate experiential and digital methods in their classrooms. Families, often the audience for these stories, gain insight into their children’s educational journeys, fostering deeper appreciation and support for experiential learning opportunities.

Alignment with Research and Learning Science

Research emphasizes the effectiveness of DST as a student-centered pedagogy. Stanley and Freeman (2017) demonstrate how DST fosters engagement and agency by giving students the power to narrate their own experiences and frame their futures. This empowers the classroom, allowing students to critique, reflect, and contribute authentically. Additionally, DST leverages multiple literacies—visual, digital, and narrative—enhancing comprehension and retention through the integration of multimodal learning approaches. These findings align with learning science principles, which advocate for active, learner-driven experiences that connect academic content to real-world contexts.

Conclusion

Digital storytelling is more than a creative practice; it is a powerful tool to engage and empower community members. By enabling students, teachers, and families to reflect, connect, and communicate through digital media, DST fosters a culture of empowered learning. Whether used to share personal growth, explore cultural heritage, or inspire educational innovation, DST transforms the act of storytelling into a collaborative and impactful experience that resonates within and beyond the classroom.
